North Country is a free local newspaper. We collect as little about you as we can, we use it only to bring you the paper, and we never sell it.
What we collect
When you join the list
Your email address, and your hamlet if you pick one. We also note that you signed up on northcountryli.com, so we know the form is working.
When you email us
If you send a tip, an event or an advertising question, we receive your email address, your message and anything you attach.
When you visit the site
Our web host, Vercel, handles your IP address and basic details of each request, such as your browser type and the page you asked for, to deliver the page and protect it from abuse. Our typefaces load from Google Fonts, which also receives your IP address.
This website sets no cookies and runs no analytics or advertising trackers. If that ever changes, we'll update this page first.
How we use it
- To send you North Country. That's the Friday paper today, and later any daily edition or hamlet alerts you choose to get.
- To decide what to cover. Knowing how many readers live in each hamlet helps us put reporting where it's needed.
- To reply to you, and to report out the tips you send.
We don't sell, rent or trade your information, and we don't give your email address to advertisers. Advertisers only ever see overall numbers, like how many people read the paper, never who you are.
Tips and sources
We won't publish your name or contact details as the source of a tip unless you tell us we can. Every tip is checked against official records or other sources before anything runs, so a tip alone never becomes a story.
The newsletter
North Country is delivered by beehiiv, which stores our subscriber list for us. Like most email services, it records whether an issue was opened and which links were clicked. We look at those numbers to make the paper better.
Every issue has an unsubscribe link at the bottom. One click and you're off the list.
Who else sees it
Only the services we use to run the paper, and only what each one needs to do its job:
- beehiiv: newsletter delivery and the subscriber list
- Vercel: website hosting
- Google Fonts: the typefaces on this site
- Our email provider, which holds messages sent to our addresses
We'll also disclose information when the law requires it.
How long we keep it
We keep your subscription details while you're subscribed. If you unsubscribe, we keep your address marked as unsubscribed so we don't email you again by mistake, unless you ask us to delete it completely. We keep emails and tips as long as we need them for our reporting.
Your choices
- Unsubscribe anytime, using the link in any issue.
- See, correct or delete what we have about you. Email us and we'll take care of it within 30 days.
Children
North Country is written for adults. We don't knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you think a child has signed up, tell us and we'll delete it.
Security
This site is served only over an encrypted connection. We keep access to subscriber information to the people who put out the paper, and we use established providers to store it. No system is perfectly secure, so if a breach ever affects your information, we'll tell you.
Changes
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we'll say so in the paper before the change takes effect, and update the date at the top of this page.
